Lal Ded

 She was born in 1320 AD. Lalleshwari was a Kashmiri saint and mystic poetess of Kashmiri Shaivism school of philosophy. She was also known as Lal Ded,Mother Lalla, Lalla Aarifa, Lal Diddi, Lalishri, etc. She was born in Pandrethan in Srinagar in 1320 AD. She wrote mystical verses in ‘Vakh’ or ‘Vatsun’meaning ‘Speech’.Her verse known as ‘Lal Vakhs’, are one of the earliest compositions in the Kashmiri language.During her life, she inspired and interacted with many sufis of Kashmir, one of them was SheikhNoor-ud-dinWali or Nunda Rishi. She died in 1392 AD.

Nund Reshi

He was born in 1377 AD in Kulgam district. He was known as Sheikh Noor-ud-dinWali or Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani.He was a famous Muslim Kashmiri mystic saint. He was the founder of the ‘Reshi order’ in Kashmir. He wrote ‘Shrukhs’which were preserved in a book ‘Nur Nama’. It was written by Baba Nasib-ud-din Ghazi Persian. This book is preserved in the Shrine of Nur-ud-din at Charar-i-Sharief in Srinagar.He died in 1440 AD.

Habba Khatoon

She was born in 1554 in Chandrahar village in Kashmir. She was one of the great mystic poetesses of her era. She was the wife of Chak ruler Yusuf Shah Chak. Habba Khatoon introduced ‘Lol’ lyric into Kashmiri poetry. ‘Songs of Habba Khatoon’ are still very popular in Kashmiri which show the desire of reunion with her husband Yusuf Shah Chak, who was arrested by Akbar, the great Mughal Ruler. She died in 1609 AD.

Mahmud Gami

He was born in 1765 AD in a historical town of Doru Shahabad in South Kashmir.He was a renowned poet and introduced the Persian forms of the Masnavi and Ghazal in Kashmiri. His work is found mostly in Kashmiri language.His important work is ‘Yusuf Zulaikha’ (poem) which was the first and most popular masnavi in Kashmiri. Other important works are ‘Shirin-Khusro’, ‘Laila-Majnu’.He is renowned for his Ghazals which were based on Sufiana and love themes.He died in 1855 AD.

Rasool Mir

He was born at Doru Shahabad in Anantnag district.He was one of the renowned Kashmiri poet.He was also known as ‘John Keats’ of  Kashmir. It is believed that he brought Ghazal to Kashmiri poetry. His ghazals were basedon themes like rivers, valleys, birds, fruits and imagery of Kashmir.He died in 1870 AD.

Paramananda

He was born in 1791 in Seer village near Mattan (Anantnag district) in Jammu and Kashmir.He was a famous saint poet and philosopher of Kashmir. Earlier in his life, he wrote poetry in Persian under the poetic title of ‘Gharib’.His important works are ‘Radhaswaymvara’, ‘Sudamacharita’ and ‘Sivalagan’.He died in 1864 AD.

Zinda Kaul

He was born in 1884 in Habbakadal city in Srinagar.He was popularly known as ‘Master ji’.He was a writer, poet and teacher and composed his work in Persian,Hindi, Urdu and Kashmiri. He was the first Kashmiri poet who received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1956 for his book of poetry ‘Sumran’.His famous poems were ‘Sumran’, ‘Reply’, ‘Not Prepared’ and ‘Compulsion’.He started writing in Kashmiri language in 1942. He wrote in mystical style and his writings were influenced by Bhakti tradition. He died in 1965.

Ghulam Ahmad Mahjoor

He was born in 1887 in Pulwama district.He was a renowned poet of Kashmir valley.He was also known as ‘Shayar-e-Kashmir’ (the poet of Kashmir). He brought old Kashmiri poetry into new one. His themes of poetry involved freedom and progress in Kashmir which awakened nationalismamong Kashmiri people. He also revolutionised the traditional forms of nazm and ghazal.His first Kashmiri poem ‘Vanta hay Versy’was published in 1918 AD. His important poems are ‘Flower of Nishat Bagh’, ‘I Long to Put on Saffron Robes’, ‘Let me rock you in my Arms’ and so on.He died in 1954.

Dina Nath Nadim

He was born in 1916 in Srinagar.He was a famous poet of Kashmir.He led the progressive writers movement in Kashmir. It was the era of Modern Kashmiri poetry.He contributed by his work in ‘Kwang Posh’which was a monthly journal run by the communists of Kashmir. He was awarded for his work by Nehru Award in 1917.His first Kashmiri poem was ‘Maej Kashir’ (1942).He wrote many poems in English,Hindi, Urdu and Kashmiri.He received Sahitya Akademi Award in 1986 for ‘Shihul-Kul’, a collection of his poems. His important poems are ‘Bombur Te Yambarzal first Goperas’ ‘Trivanzah’ (Monalogue), ‘Zit’nl (Fireflies), etc.He died in 1988.

Nighat Sahiba

She was born in Anatnag district in 1983. She is a Kashmiri poet who uwrites in Kashmiri and Urdu.Her writings are based on conflict, rebellion, romance, feminism, pain and existentialism. She was awarded Akbar Jaipuri Memorial Award in 2014 for her contribution in Urdu poetry and also got Sahitya Akademi Award in 2017 for her contribution in Kashmiri poetry collection namely ‘Zard Paneki Dair’ (Yuva Puraskar).Her important poems are ‘Piles of Palled Leaves’ and ‘Betwixt the two’.
